Barcelona is the capital of the autonomous community of Catalonia, the province of the same name and the Barcelonés region. With a population of nearly 1.7 million inhabitants, it is the second most populated city in Spain.
Barcelona offers its visitors the possibility of walking from the Roman ruins and the medieval city to the neighborhoods of Catalan modernism, with its distinctive buildings, its square blocks of sectioned edges, its tree-lined streets, and wide avenues. The old city is practically flat, while the new neighborhoods, as they approach the coastal mountain range, become steeper.
